Somewhere along the way, Emotional Intelligence got tossed into the “soft skills” bucket.
Which, IMO, is a darn shame.
There is nothing soft about staying calm under pressure, reading the room, navigating a difficult conversation, influencing without authority, or responding thoughtfully when your inner critic is tap-dancing on your last nerve.
That is leadership.
And in the growing world of AI, EQ is more important than ever.
AI can summarize data.
AI can draft a memo.
AI can probably make a spreadsheet behave better than most humans.
But AI cannot replace courage, curiosity, communication, compassion, or creativity in human leadership.
That is where you come in.
Technical skills and IQ may help you get hired. But EQ often determines how you earn trust, build influence, strengthen executive presence, and position yourself for the next level.
Or, as I like to say:
IQ gets you hired, but EQ gets you promoted.
And no, EQ is not about becoming the warmest, fuzziest, most agreeable person in the conference room. Please. We have enough pressure already.
EQ is about becoming more aware, more intentional, and more effective.
It is a strategic leadership skill. And the good news? It can be learned, practiced, and strengthened.
Season 2 of Leadership Laboratory is coming soon, and we’re kicking it off with a banger episode on Emotional Intelligence.
